It's a dirty, messy job, and something you never think about doing, often until it's too late and your computer isn't function properly, or it's randomly shutting down or even running extremely slow. You don't need to be living in a dirty environment to accumulate this sort of mess. There's dust and dirt in the air around you at all times. In a clean computer you'd normally see the thin metal blades of the heat sink and vent where the fan blows the heat out the back of the computer. In this case, time and buildup have completely blocked the vent forcing heat to instead be blown all through the computer rather than out the back. This caused freezes and crashes due to the excessive heat buildup.
Gunk of all sorts literally "sticks" to the logicboard inside of your MacBook. Think of your logicboard as one big Swiffer. Dust and debris in the air is sucked into the computer to help cool the inside down. What happens though is the dust and debris in the air coming in ends up sticking to the internal components electrostatically, and pushing back out much cleaner air. This buildup occurs in all environments, not just in typically harsher or dirtier environments. Removing this gunk and dirt will help keep your computer running smoothly and give it a far longer life.
